March 2
Native Plant Society of New Jersey’s 2024 Annual Meeting: Building Community with Native Plants, Toms River
Plants, like people, need communities to thrive. Native plants support their communities—their ecosystems—in many ways. They provide food for insects, birds, and other wildlife; serve as host plants for insect offspring; offer shelter; support soil creation; conserve water; and reduce runoff. Thus, a critical way that humans can support ecosystems is by sowing and cultivating native plants. For maximum success in those efforts, there are many factors to consider, from “right place, right plant” to landscaping strategies that communicate intentionality to surrounding human communities. In this conference, expert speakers—Sarah F. Jayne, Mariellé Anzelone, and Toshi Yano—explore those considerations as they apply to urban, suburban, and rural landscapes. Fee.

PennState presents Nature’s Best Hope with Doug Tallamy, Malvern
Recent headlines about global insect declines, the impending extinction of 1 million species worldwide, and 3 billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Doug Tallamy, a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, will discuss simple steps that each of us can take to reverse declining biodiversity and explain why we are nature’s best hope.

The Woods in Your Backyard Online 10-week Course
Are you looking to become a better manager of the land you own? Do you want to learn more about your property’s woodlands, such as ways to enhance wildlife habitat? The University of Maryland Extension’s “The Woods in Your Backyard” online course promotes the stewardship of small parcels of land for the personal enjoyment of their owners and for the improved environmental quality for society. This course is for you if: you have 1–10 acres of land in the Eastern United States that is forested or has un-mowed natural areas, or you have a mowed lawn area that you want to turn into a woodland, or you are a land manager or part of a group that manages natural areas, such as a preserve or a community woodland. One of the most effective ways you can improve water and air quality, wildlife habitat, and natural area health is by shifting areas of lawn into un-mowed natural areas or woodlands. Over a period of years, this will reduce the time you spend mowing your lawn and give you more time to enjoy your family, property, and hobbies. Our ten-week, non-credit, self-directed online course will teach you how to do this, without having to attend evening or weekend workshops. All you need is your computer, the provided publications, and the desire to become a better steward of the land. Fee.

Blue Ridge Prism Fall Meeting: What About the Insects?
Join us for our virtual Fall Meeting where we’ll dive into the fascinating world of insects and their importance in our ecosystem! Butterfly, ladybug, firefly, caterpillar, luna moth, bumble bee– all insects! (Spotted lanternfly– also an insect.) Insects play a crucial role in our world. Yet, their numbers are declining at a steady and alarming rate. Most insects are extremely beneficial to our local ecosystems. Our birds, plants, flowers, trees, and vegetables could not survive without them! However, there are some insects–displaced from their original habitat– that pose challenges to our local environment. During our event, Dr. Linda Fink will discuss the beauty and importance of insects, and will examine the effects of invasive organisms on our native insects. She will also talk about the effects of invasive insects on our forests. No fee.
