Native Plant Society of Staten Island presents Live Zoom with Doug Tallamy
Introducing Doug Tallamy, the prominent conservationist and native-plant activist to know. NPSSI is honored that Doug will speak to us via a live Zoom presentation on January 8, 2023, starting at 3 pm. “The biggest message that I want to convey is that everybody has a role. You either own property, or you can help somebody who owns property: a land conservancy, a park, or preserve. Everybody should bear the responsibility of good earth stewardship, and nobody has the ethical right to maintain that four-acre lawn anymore. Such places are destroying the watershed, they are not supporting the pollinators, they’re not supporting the food web, and they’re not sequestering carbon. So, it’s our responsibility to start to fix that, to share a sense of responsibility, a sense of urgency, and also give a sense of hope. I think this message is starting to go viral. You know, not like a Facebook thing would, but faster than I can keep up with.” $5-$8 fee.

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve’s Winter Lecture Series: Monarch Butterflies: Kings of Migration, New Hope
Every year, monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus)—those showy, Halloween-colored beauties—engage in one of nature’s most extraordinary feats: flying to a very few secluded mountain valleys in Mexico. After wintering, they begin a perilous journey north, sometimes taking generations to return to Pennsylvania. And in the fall, they start over again. How do they accomplish this remarkable task? Why did it even evolve? The monarch is also among the most endangered butterflies, their numbers in a steep decline in recent decades—for surprising reasons. Mike Weilbacher shares this butterfly’s unique story, weaving up-to-date science with folk legend and Aztec myth. You’ll gain a new appreciation for the king of butterflies and learn innumerable ways you can help this amazing creature. Fee.

Blue Ridge Prism: Winter Activities for Invasive Plant Control
“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost.” — J.R.R. Tolkien. There’s a lot of “gold” in your yard– native plants– many that are dormant for the winter and just waiting for the right conditions to bloom again in the spring. Help them thrive by preparing your yard and freeing it up from invasive species that hinder forest and native plant growth. Winter is a great time to tackle invasive plants! In this interactive webinar, learn about safe and effective winter control methods and find out which plants can be treated now or should be left alone for later. You can submit your questions beforehand (during registration) to our panel of experts, or ask them live. No fee.

The Westport Garden Club presents Nature’s Best Hope with Doug Tallamy
Entomologist Doug Tallamy will speak to the public and members of the Westport Garden Club via Zoom about how what humans plant affect the the ecosystems in profound ways. Recent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. To create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them, we must 1) remove the invasives on our property and 2) add the native plant communities that sustain food webs, sequester carbon, maintain diverse native bee communities, and manage our watersheds. If we do this in half of the area now in lawn, we can create Homegrown National Park, a 20 million acre network of viable habitats that will provide vital corridors connecting the few natural areas that remain. This approach to conservation empowers everyone to play a significant role in the future of the natural world. No fee.

FIRST EVER Meadowlands Bald Eagle Festival, Carlstadt
As recently as 20 years ago, seeing a Bald Eagle in the Meadowlands was a rare event. The eagles have made a remarkable comeback in part due to the State’s efforts, the endangered species act, the clean water act and the removal of DDT in the environment. Bald Eagles have successfully nested in the Meadowlands these past two years – emblematic of a healthier environment and a cleaner Hackensack River. The day will include walks, information tables (inside) and refreshments. There will also be a kid’s eagle art contest-bring eagle artwork, win a prize. Visit website for more details.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. During the last quarter-century, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact increased as more Americans embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities. On Monday, Jan. 16, and the days surrounding, AmeriCorps invites you to: engage with your community and create constructive action; act on Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity; and recommit by volunteering to serve others. You can clean up a public space, mentor a young person, or help those who are food insecure. Together, we can strengthen ties to our communities and one other while we address critical issues that divide us.

The Wild Plant Nursery is a unique resource for ecological restoration in the greater Washington, DC, area. The nursery is the region’s most comprehensive source of local, wild native-plant material (“local ecotypes”). Homegrown National Park with Douglas Tallamy, Westminster
Join Douglas Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope, for a virtual presentation on Homegrown National Park®, a grassroots call-to-action to regenerate biodiversity and ecosystem function. As individuals, we can create diverse ecosystems in our yards, communities, and surrounding lands by reducing lawn, planting native plants, and removing non-native invasive species. The initial goal of HNP® is to create a national movement to restore 20 million acres with native plants, an area representing ½ of what is currently privately-owned lawn. We are at a critical point where we are losing so many native plant and animal species that our natural life support is in jeopardy. However, if many people make small changes, we can restore healthy ecological networks and weather the changes ahead. Registrants can choose whether to attend this event virtually or in person as part of a watch party at Exploration Commons at 50 East. EC50 attendees will be joined by moderator and Carroll County Master Gardener Laura O’Callaghan and will be eligible for prize drawings. No fee.

Doug Tallamy – Nature’s Best Hope: Conservation That Starts in Your Yard, Millbrook
Join Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for an evening with renowned entomologist, ecologist, and best-selling author Doug Tallamy. He will discuss how we can create home landscapes that enhance local ecosystems, rather than degrade them – to serve as sustaining refuges for native plants and animals. Tallamy’s first book, Bringing Nature Home, awakened many to how “everyone with access to a patch of Earth can make a significant contribution toward sustaining biodiversity by simply choosing native plants.” Nature’s Best Hope is the next step in his vision for grassroots conservation. In it, Tallamy provides practical, effective, and achievable suggestions for how yards can be transformed into conservation corridors. Through individual action, he urges us to become part of the solution by shrinking lawns, planting natives, restoring beneficial insects, and creating connectivity. Free and open to all, this program is co-sponsored by the Millbrook Garden Club. Registration via Eventbrite is required; there are separate signups for virtual and in-person attendance.

Nature Forward Conservation Café: Yes, in My HOA Back (and Front) Yard!
Join nature writer and Humane Gardener founder Nancy Lawson as she hosts a panel discussion among leading experts who have been on the front lines of advocating in MD and VA for allowing low-impact, native habitat landscaping in HOAs and common interest communities. It happens too often that environmentally conscious homeowners convert their lawns to native plants only to be reprimanded by their homeowners’ association for growing “weeds,” leaving stalks up for birds, or refusing to use pesticides. But even in an HOA, wildlife-friendly landscaping doesn’t have to be DOA. Hear about a recent landmark case in Maryland that led to a state law codifying wildlife-friendly gardens, sparking similar efforts in HOAs, towns and counties across the nation. Join in the discussion with local experts from MD and VA, including Janet Crouch, Melinda Soltys, and Barbara Ryan (read more about them below!). This conversation will include a Q&A with the audience as we share ideas for continuing the unstoppable momentum toward new ethics and practices in home landscaping. Fee.
